AI is no longer a future trend. It is already reshaping the UK labour market, changing what employers need from their teams and what employees need to stay competitive.
PwC’s 2026 UK AI Jobs Barometer makes this clear: AI is not simply replacing people or creating efficiencies in isolation. It is creating a new divide between organisations that are embedding AI successfully and those that are falling behind. The report found that UK job postings requiring specialist AI skills reached 180,000, up from 112,000 in 2024, while specialist AI-skilled workers commanded an average 34.2% wage premium.
For employers and employees, the message is simple: AI capability is becoming a business-critical skill.
One of the most important findings from PwC’s report is that the narrative around AI replacing workers is too simplistic. PwC highlights that the most AI-exposed organisations have actually grown headcount more strongly than less AI-exposed businesses, with headcount growth reaching 52% compared with 36% among companies less able to take advantage of AI.
This matters because AI is not just about automation. It is about enabling people to work differently.
Routine tasks can be streamlined. Repetitive processes can be automated. Data can be analysed faster. Customer journeys can be improved. But the real value comes when employees understand how to use AI tools alongside human judgement, creativity, leadership and problem-solving.
PwC also found that roles where AI removes routine tasks and enables people to focus on higher-value work are seeing stronger growth than roles where AI is mainly simplifying tasks.
For employers, the risk is not that AI exists. The risk is that competitors learn how to use it faster.
PwC reports that companies most able to apply AI to operations achieved productivity growth of 34%, compared with 24% for companies less able to integrate AI effectively. The top 20% of global firms capable of integrating AI at scale saw average labour productivity growth of 163%.
That is not a marginal gain. That is a major performance gap.
Businesses that invest in AI and automation skills can build teams capable of improving processes, reducing manual workload, identifying opportunities, and creating better customer and employee experiences.
Businesses that delay may find themselves with teams who are willing to adapt, but not yet equipped to do so.
For employees, AI skills are quickly becoming a career advantage.
PwC found that the wage premium for workers with AI capabilities rose to 34.2% in 2025, up from 11% the previous year.
That reflects a clear market signal: employers are willing to pay more for people who can help them understand, apply and scale AI.
But this does not mean every employee needs to become a software engineer or data scientist. The opportunity is broader than that. Organisations need people who can spot automation opportunities, understand AI tools, work with data, improve workflows, and help colleagues adopt new ways of working.
In other words, the future belongs to people who can combine technical confidence with human skills.
At Velocity Academy, our Level 4 AI & Automation apprenticeship is designed to help employers and employees respond to this shift.
It gives learners the opportunity to build practical, work-based skills in areas such as:
For employers, this means developing AI capability from within the business. Rather than relying only on external consultants or waiting for the perfect hire, organisations can upskill existing employees who already understand their processes, customers and challenges.
For employees, it provides a structured route into one of the fastest-growing areas of the labour market.
One of the biggest advantages of an apprenticeship route is that learners can gain valuable skills while working, earning and applying their learning directly in the workplace.
Through the Level 4 AI & Automation apprenticeship with Velocity Academy, employees can develop future-ready AI and automation skills without taking on traditional student debt.
That matters. As the demand for AI skills grows, people should not have to choose between career progression and financial pressure. Apprenticeships create a practical, accessible route into high-value skills development.
PwC’s report shows that AI is already creating winners. The organisations pulling ahead are not simply experimenting with tools. They are embedding AI into operations, developing their people, and building the skills needed to turn technology into measurable business value.
For employers, the next step is to invest in the people who will drive that change.
For employees, the next step is to build the skills that will keep them relevant, valuable and confident in an AI-enabled workplace.
The AI skills gap is here. The opportunity is here too.
Velocity Academy’s Level 4 AI & Automation apprenticeship gives employers and employees a practical way to close that gap — building the skills needed for the future of work, without leaving learners with student debt.
